Abstract

Parents who are the first and main environment for children who have a very important role in childcare. Parenting is communication and interaction between parents and children, among its activities are providing protection, guidance, and maintenance of children's growth and development, especially parents who have children who are active users of social media at elementary school age. This is because elementary school-age children still need full guidance from parents to keep their children's growth and development within normal limits and not be negatively affected by social media. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method that reveals how the assistance of parents who have elementary school-age children in Surabaya. In collecting data, researchers conducted in-depth interviews with eight informants to find out how parents mentor their children. The results obtained are that parents have indirectly assisted their children and have applied the rules in everyday life. It's just that, related to security in the social media space, especially related to the spread of hoaxes, parents tend not to do it and don't even know how to report hoax content that is spread. It was also found that excessive use of social media in children leads to ignorant behavior with the surrounding and children tend to imitate bad behavior from watching on social media. However, parents have also sought other activities so that children are not adversely affected by social media by registering children for the Koran and madrasah schools.
