Abstract

Film as a mass medium not only reflects reality, but also reshapes it based on cultural conventions. Story films such as Miracle In Cell No. 7 Indonesian Remake Version raise social issues, including the role of a father or fatherhood. One of the Indonesian Remake Versions of the film Miracle In Cell No. 7 highlights the role of a single parent who has mental limitations (disabilities) in raising children. So researchers are interested in researching this film and this research aims to see how the representation of fatherhood is shown in the character of the disabled father in the Indonesian Remake Version of the film Miracle In Cell No. 7. The method used in this research is semiotic analysis by John Fiske which consists of levels of reality, representation and ideology with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through documentation in the form of screenshots of images from scenes containing the concept of fatherhood through John Fiske's three stages of semiotics and literature study. The results of the research, in general, the film depicts an ideal father figure according to Nicholas Towsend's theory of fatherhood, although the condition of the father in the film is depicted as having mental limitations, including, firstly, Dodo's father is a father who always has emotional closeness (intimacy), secondly father who gives wise decisions (provision), thirdly father who always provides protection (protection) with full sacrifice and finally father who always provides/instills character (endowment). Based on this, the researchers also examined that the Indonesian Remake Version of the film Miracle In Cell No. 7 indirectly counteracts the construction of a patriarchal culture where the burden of caring for children is only the responsibility of a woman or mother. So in this case it has undermined the ideology or culture that the parenting system is no longer absolutely a woman's obligation, but can also be done by men (fathers) and even by a father who has mental limitations and this film has shown the public that Disabled figures are described as being able to take full responsibility in caring for children and the role of being a parent.
