Abstract

Generation Z lives in an era of significant transformation of masculinity. However, the presence of male pageants shows that society still holds traditional concepts of masculinity, as seen from the audience's negative comments towards male pageant participants on Instagram pageant portal @selebhunt. If left unchecked, this could trigger toxic masculinity. This research focuses on East Java Generation Z's perception of masculinity of male pageant participants through posts on Instagram @selebhunt. The research method uses perception analysis of qualitative data from interviews with generation Z in East Java. The results show that generation Z in East Java has a more open and inclusive perception of masculinity. Analysis of @selebhunt's Instagram posts found that generation Z tends to accept and appreciate various expressions of masculinity, including softer and aesthetic ones. The different opinions on the definition of masculinity among generation Z in East Java reflect the social and cultural dynamics that influence the way each individual interprets and expresses gender identity.
