Abstract

Indonesia produces a large amount of waste every year. Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) shows that in 2022, there will be 35.95 million tons of waste in 303 districts/cities in Indonesia. As much as 38.4% of this waste comes from households and 37.51% is not managed properly. Indonesia is also the second largest producer of marine plastic waste in the world, with 64 million tons of plastic waste per year, of which 3.2 million tons end up in the ocean. This high volume of waste has a negative impact on the environment, especially since much of the waste is not reprocessed. One solution to the waste problem is to implement a zero waste lifestyle. Implementing this lifestyle early on, especially for elementary school-aged children, can help reduce household waste. Children aged 9-12 years old are in a phase of cognitive and moral development that makes them able to understand the concept of zero waste. This design aims to design an interactive illustration book about zero waste for children aged 9-12 years old. The book uses visual and interactive elements to attract children, such as brightly colored illustrations and do-it-yourself activities. This design uses observation, interview, and literature study research methods. The results show that this interactive illustration book is effective in increasing children's understanding and motivation to implement environmentally friendly practices in everyday life. This interactive illustration book can be an effective educational media to raise awareness and motivation of children aged 9-12 years in implementing a zero waste lifestyle.
