Abstract

ABSTRACT There is a lack of understanding about state defense and local history among Indonesian youth, especially in Kediri City. Although the Constitution and Law No.3 of 2002 emphasize the importance of citizen participation in state defense, research shows that many teenagers are less familiar with local history and regional heroes such as Major Bismo, an important figure in the struggle for independence in Kediri City. This reflects the loss of love for the country that the younger generation should have. Adolescence is considered a crucial period, where the young generation is the future leader. However, a lack of understanding about history and state defense can have a negative impact on the sustainability of the nation. Therefore, the proposed solution is to use comic media, which has been proven effective in increasing learning motivation and problem-solving skills, as well as broadening cultural insights. Comics not only present information in an interesting and easy-to-understand way, but also evoke readers' imagination and empathy. While digital comics have the advantage of accessibility, printed comics offer an alternative solution to reduce gadget dependency among teenagers. Therefore, this research motivates the design of comics as a means of introducing the history of Major Bismo to the people of Kediri, with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the values of state defense and increasing a sense of pride in local cultural heritage.
