Abstract
Upload story is one of the societies’ habit phenomenon for sharing story in whatsapp status. Uploades stories can be in the picture, video, and only text form. As a technology literate generation since birth, Generation Z is suitable to choose as research subject. Therefore, this topic of research is ‘How The Habit of Generation Z in Use of Whatsapp Status as A Communication Medium’. Generation Z who is used as research subject is located in Surabaya. Surabaya is selected as research location with a concideration that Surabaya is the second of metropolitan city. So, Generation Z who is located in Surabaya familiar with the development of technology and using whatsapp as a part of communication medium in their life. This type of research is qualitative descriptive with indepth-interview and documentation as the data of collection technique. The result of research data show that the function of whatsapp status as communication medium of Generation Z is to Expression Communication, Social Communication, and Instrumental Communication. The purpose of Generation Z for using whatsapp as a communication medium is devided based on their role. As a message sender, Generation Z using whatsapp to give information, expression, promotion, notice someone, and help others. Meanwhile, as the recipient of the message, the purpose of Generation Z open the status is to pass the time, satisfying curiosity, getting information, and estabilishing communication. Based on the features provided, Generation Z rarely and almost never uses the filter and add text to images or videos features. The timeline of Generation Z to upload personal status is more flexible than regarding work status. The general message is sent via public status privacy, people who have no interest will be included in my contact category unless, and a specific message will be sent via the only share feature with. The factors that influence Generation Z to comment are message content and proximity factors. The negative respons which is given by the message receiver can influence the Generation Z attitude or behavior in the next uploading.
