Abstract

Mental health is still a taboo subject in some countries, including South Korea. This problem is motivated by the presence of perfectionism, bullying and violance among adolescents, as well as a lack of support system in society. The behavior of people who do not care about mental health issues and sufferers makes Kpop musicians create song that contain their expression and criticsms about these problems. This study aims to determine the discourse on mental health problem built into the lyrics of the Kpop song Lee Hi – Breathe, N.Flying – It’s Fine, and Younha – Winter Flower. The method used in this research is critical discourse analysis with a qualitative approach. The critical discourse analysis model used is Teun A. van Dijk’s model which divides discourse into three dimensions, namely the dimension of text, social cognition, and social context. The result show that in the song lyrics there is criticsm of people who do not care about mental health, including netizen on social media who like to make malicious comments, as well as the role of government and entertainment agencies in making strict system so that it has negative impact on one’s mental. Keywords : critical discourse analysis, mental health, kpop song lyrics
