Abstract

Plastic waste has become an urgent environmental issue. According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2021, the total waste generated was approximately 68.5 million tons, with around 11.6 million tons or approximately 17% of the total being plastic waste. Conventional methods of plastic waste management, such as landfills and open dumping, have negative environmental impacts. Plastic incineration also contributes to air pollution. Recycling plastic only transforms it into a different form without reducing the overall plastic waste. Therefore, alternative methods are needed, and one such method is pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is a process that degrades materials at temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C, producing gases that are condensed and distilled into oil, leaving behind char. Various factors such as material composition, temperature, residence time, and feedstock size influence the pyrolysis process. This study aims to develop an environmentally friendly pyrolysis technology to convert plastic waste into oil-based alternative fuel, evaluate the quality of the oil products, and identify suitable plastic waste types for pyrolysis. The results indicate that LDPE plastic waste pyrolysis at 800°C yields oil with properties approaching Pertamina's gasoline and diesel standards.
