Abstract

One film that raises the issue of Jamaican culture and inspires many communities of young people and musicians in the country to the flow of reggae music and the appearance of the reggae legend. This Marley film circulated in 2012. Bob Marley is one of the famous Reggae music figures. In the film the messages of peace, rejection of racism and Jamaica culture. Likewise with the visualization in the film Marley, Bob Marley tries to unite various racial groups to unite in shaping peace in the world. It can be seen from the many groups of races gathered to party and sing together. The Jamaican culture lifestyle subculture can be easily tagged, most of them often using striking clothing and hairstyle attributes. The style of appearance in the Jamaican culture subculture mostly mimics the style of the legendary Jamaican musician Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as Bob Marley, who is a true Rastafarian. Almost all of what is associated with the name Bob Marley has always been a reference for the Reggae music community, ranging from dreadlock hairstyles, love of Reggae music (a flow of music originating in Jamaica), to the habit of smoking weed although not all Rastafarians smoke weed, so often Reggae subculture is identified as Rasta or Rastafarian. Based on the above background, the formulation of the problem in this study is as follows: what is the meaning of the denotation, connotation and myth contained in the Marley film according to Roland Barthes's semiotic theory that presents Jamaican culture? This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Namely research methods that produce descriptive data in the form of words, pictures and books. The research paradigm used is a constructivist paradigm based on general thinking about theories produced by researchers and constructivist flow theoretical. The results of this study present several scenes that present Jamaican culture, both verbally and non-verbally, such as the reggae music scene and the dreadlocks lifestyle and Jamaican fashion culture shown by reggae legend Bob Marley in his life's journey and struggle through music. Keywords : Jamaican culture, Bob Marley, dreads, fashion, Rastafarians, documentaries film.
