Abstract
Since ancient times beauty product advertisements have always been constructed with models who have white skin and ideal bodies. Today it seems that there is a shift in the meaning of beauty that is inclusive and unlimited. One of them is through the Citra advertisement "Ragam Cantik Indonesia". The advertisement features models with different skin colors, hair types, and various other physical characteristics. This study aims to examine how the audience (adolescent girls) in Surabaya interpret the concept of beauty standards in the Citra advertisement "Ragam Cantik Indonesia". This study used a qualitative research method with a reception analysis approach from Stuart Hall. In the process of interpreting meaning, Stuart Hall divides the audience into three positions, namely Dominant Hegemony, Negotiation, and Opposition. This study shows the results that each informant has a different meaning or interpretation of the results. Furthermore, this study also classifies the results of the interpretation of informants based on Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding theory. The results show that of the seven informants, there are five informants who enter the Hegemonic Dominant position, two informants in the Negotiation position. Researchers did not find any informants in the Opposition position.
