Abstract
Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. Many people migrate to Surabaya for several purposes, such as working, trading, and continuing their education. Immigrants choose the city of Surabaya, because the quality of education is superior compared to other tertiary institutions in the provinces of East Java. The highest number of universities and students in East Java province is in the city of Surabaya. With a large number of new arrivals from other regions, there is a lack of temporary housing that can accommodate overseas students. Therefore a student dormitory is needed with the theme "Comfortable Dormitory". The meaning of "Comfortable Dormitory" is a student dormitory that has adequate facilities according to the needs of students or residents, so that students can be more enthusiastic about learning. The student dormitory has a capacity of 912 residents, and has supporting facilities for residents such as a mosque, sports fields and a plaza that has a pool in the middle. Student dormitories are divided into 2 buildings, for men and women. The design of student dormitories uses a contemporary architectural approach. To be able to apply this approach, a pragmatic method is used which is motivated by the existing problems so that this design can be right in accordance with the existing issues.
