Abstract
In this modern era, many things have become a factor of losing national identity in the form of local culture which has been displaced due to foreign culture entering through high technology media such as gadgets. In general, foreign cultures have influenced the lifestyles of teenagers and children who should be the successors of the nation who are more familiar with the culture of the Indonesian state. Cultural preservation can be done by instilling cultural knowledge in a way that is easily understood by children. Character and knowledge education is carried out in the age range of 0-6 years, while at the age of 7-12 years is the age of introduction of further knowledge. The loss of literacy culture and spending more time with electronic media such as handphones are problems that require solutions in delivering cultural knowledge to children aged 7-9 years. The phenomenon of the petik laut tradition is still foreign to children aged 7-9 years in the area around their residence in Situbondo. Situbondo is one of the cities located in East Java which has a low existence where the lack of characteristics of the city of Situbondo is still less prominent. In overcoming the existing problems, a research was conducted with quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The research was conducted to determine the character of children aged 7-9 years to the contents of the discussion on the design of the picturebook. The approach to the coastal village head and residents around the coastal village is a method used in conveying information on the sea picking tradition in the coastal village of Situbondo city. The strategy used in designing a picture story book for children aged 7-9 years was obtained by approaching the qualitative method of interviewing the target. In addition, the analysis of the result data was carried out through a 5W + 1H analysis. From the results of the analysis carried out, a keyword is obtained which then becomes the title, characteristic of the purpose of the design guidelines. All visual elements related to the design will relate to keywords and strategies for conveying information to children.
