Abstract

Film Selesai presents the issue of mental illness which is a plot twist in the film. This controversial film also touched on gender issues. Mental illness are still a taboo in society. Mass media including films, often display mental illness with negative images. The purpose od this study was to determine the audience acceptance of mental illness in the film Selesai. this research uses descriptive qualitative analysis method with reception analysis approach through Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding mode. The data collection method used was in-depth interviews with seven informants. The result of this study indiciate that each informant has a different interpretation. The interpretation is influenced by socio-cultural, values and norms, as wes as the use of media. From the interviews, it was found that informants 4, 5, 6, and 7 belonged to the dominant-hegemonic position category. Then informant 2 is included in the negotiated position. Then informans 1 and 3 are included in the oppositional position category.
