Abstract

This research was motivated by the emergence of the video "Kita vs Body Image" which was published through the Gita Savitri youtube account which was uploaded on 22 November 2019. In the video, it discusses a person's attitude, views, beliefs and perceptions of their physicality. This research focuses on how audiences view YouTube videos. The audience can interpret the text they read on their own and it is not always in line with the ideology of the text. Therefore, this study tries to find out how the Surabaya student audience receives our YouTube video vs Body Image on Gita Savitri's Youtube account. This research method used in this research is qualitative research with the study approach of reception analysis of the encoding / decoding model by Stuart Hall. The audience itself can also interpret the text in a unique way and not necessarily in line with what the message maker intended. this is influenced by the field of experience factor and the audience frame of reference. Data collection was carried out by In-depth Interview (In-depth Interview) to informants who watched the video on Gita Savitri's Youtube account. Based on the results of the research, the researcher concluded that the aspects presented in this study were not entirely in the form of acceptance / approval or rejection / disapproval of informants. The meaning of the informant moves simultaneously from one position to another. This interpretation comes from the experiential knowledge that the informant gets from family, friends, the environment, the media he consumes on a daily basis. the different experiences led informants to interpret them differently.
