Abstract
The increasing concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere has become an environmental concern that encourages the development of effective and sustainable carbon capture technologies. The microalga Nannochloropsis oculata has potential for CO₂ biofixation because it can assimilate CO₂ through photosynthesis while producing biomass. However, biomass productivity and CO₂ biofixation are influenced by light conditions, making the regulation of light intensity and photoperiod important for supporting microalgal growth. This study aimed to analyze the effects of different light intensities and photoperiods on the growth and biomass productivity of N. oculata, determine the optimal treatment combination, and evaluate its CO₂ biofixation potential based on biomass productivity. The study was conducted experimentally using 4-L photobioreactors with nine treatment combinations of light intensities of 2,500, 3,000, and 3,500 lux and photoperiods of 8:16, 12:12, and 16:8 h light:dark for 10 days. Growth was monitored based on cell density using a hemocytometer and dry biomass weight, while biomass productivity was used to indirectly estimate CO₂ biofixation potential. The results showed that the highest cell density and dry biomass were obtained at 3,500 lux–12:12, reaching 3.30 × 10⁶ cells/mL and 0.42 g/L, respectively, on day 8. The highest biomass productivity and CO₂ biofixation potential were obtained at 3,500 lux–16:8, reaching 0.043 g/L/day and 0.079 g CO₂/L/day, respectively. Therefore, controlling light intensity and photoperiod can optimize the performance of N. oculata, with 12:12 being more optimal for biomass accumulation and 16:8 for biomass productivity and CO₂ biofixation.
