Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effects of polybag size and growing-media composition and their interaction on the growth, yield, and fruit quality of mini watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). The experiment was conducted from March to May 2026 in Wiyung, Surabaya, using a 4 × 3 factorial Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Polybag sizes were 10 × 10, 20 × 20, 30 × 30, and 40 × 40 cm, while growing media consisted of soil:compost:rice-husk charcoal, soil:compost:cocopeat, and soil:compost:sand at a 1:1:1 ratio. The interaction was not significant. Polybag size strongly affected vegetative growth, flowering time, yield, and fruit quality. The 40 × 40 cm polybag produced 125.7 cm plant length, 36.00 leaves, and 7.98 mm stem diameter at 70 days after planting. The 30 × 30 cm polybag produced the highest fruit weight (1,349.4 g) and sweetness (10.78 °Brix). The soil:compost:rice-husk charcoal medium showed the most consistent performance. These findings indicate that polybag size and growing-media composition can be optimized independently, and that a 30 × 30 cm polybag filled with soil:compost:rice-husk charcoal offers an efficient balance between vegetative space requirements and fruit quality for mini watermelon cultivation in space-limited systems. Keywords: mini watermelon; polybag size; growing media; root restriction; fruit quality; Sugar Baby cultivar; container-based cultivation
