Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of adding the microalga Nitzschia sp. on the characteristics of natural organic matter in river water and to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-oxidation, coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation, and adsorption processes. The samples used in this study consisted of Tambak Oso River water and river water with the addition of Nitzschia sp. as a representation of increased microalgal biomass. The experiment was conducted in a batch system on a laboratory scale using two oxidants, KMnO4 at 0.5 mg/L and Ca(OCl)2 at 30 mg/L. Contact time variations were applied during the pre-oxidation, sedimentation, and adsorption stages. The analyzed parameters included COD, UV254, pH, temperature, microalgal abundance, and functional groups using FTIR. The results showed that the addition of Nitzschia sp. increased COD from 112 mg/L to 384 mg/L and UV254 from 0.2229 cm-1 to 0.4240 cm-1. The optimum contact times were obtained at 60 minutes for pre-oxidation, 240 minutes for sedimentation, and 90 minutes for adsorption. Ca(OCl)2 treatment showed the best performance, with COD removal efficiency of 25% and UV254 removal efficiency of 65.31% in river water with added microalgae. The combined treatment process using Ca(OCl)2 was more effective in reducing natural organic matter, particularly in river water containing microalgae. Keywords: Natural Organic Matter, Ca(OCl)2, KMnO4, Coagulation-Flocculation-Sedimentation and Adsorption, Nitzschia sp., UV254
