Abstract

Peat water is characterized by poor water quality, including low pH and high concentrations of organic matter and color, which limit its direct use as a clean water source. One alternative treatment approach is coagulation-flocculation using a pneumatic mixing system. This study aimed to analyze the effects of sparger type and air flow rate on treated water quality and to determine the optimum configuration based on the overall performance of water quality parameters. The experiments were conducted using a pneumatic reactor with variations in sparger type and air flow rate during the coagulation and flocculation stages. The analyzed water quality parameters included Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and color. A total of 36 treatment combinations were evaluated using statistical analysis and performance ranking based on the results of each parameter. The results showed that sparger type had a significant effect on TDS, pH, and DOM, but did not have a significant effect on COD and color. Meanwhile, air flow rate did not significantly affect most of the water quality parameters but showed a significant effect on DOM. Based on the ranking of the 36 treatment combinations, the optimum configuration was obtained using a 3 mm perforated PVC pipe as the coagulation sparger and a Microporous Ceramic Sparger as the flocculation sparger, with air flow rates of 6 L/min during coagulation and 0.4 L/min during flocculation. This configuration obtained a total score of 38 and produced TDS of 163 ppm, pH of 7.44, DOM of 1.42 mg/L, COD of 43.74 mg/L, and color of 26.2 Pt-Co. The optimum configuration achieved removal efficiencies of 84% for COD, 93% for DOM, and 98% for color, indicating the most balanced overall treatment performance among the evaluated configurations. Keywords: peat water, pneumatic coagulation-flocculation, sparger, air flow rate, water quality, optimum configuration.
