Abstract
Wastewater pollution from the tobacco industry is generally characterized by high levels of organic compounds, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and phenol, which originate from tobacco processing and the addition of flavoring agents; as a result, it has the potential to degrade the quality of receiving water bodies if discharged without adequate treatment. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the electro-Fenton process in removing COD and phenol from tobacco industry wastewater originating from a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Pasuruan region, East Java, by varying the Fenton reagent ratio (H₂O₂:FeSO₄) and the addition of a chelating agent in the form of citric acid (C₆H₈O₇). Prior to the electro-Fenton process, the wastewater undergoes a pretreatment stage consisting of presedimentation and aeration to reduce the pollutant load before the main process. This study was conducted using an acrylic electro-Fenton reactor with iron electrodes (1 anode and 1 cathode), varying the Fenton reagent ratios (10:0.1 and 10:0.3), chelating agent ratios (0, 1:2, and 1:5), and contact times (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 minutes). Cigarette industry wastewater has a COD concentration of 1,600 mg/L and a phenol concentration of 1.66 mg/L. This study concluded that the electro-Fenton process with the addition of a chelating agent effectively improves the removal efficiency of COD and phenol. Keywords: electro-Fenton, COD, Phenol, Chelating Agent, Citric Acid
