Abstract

This study aims to identify, map, and describe the psychological and social factors underlying online gaming addiction among Generation Z adolescents in Surabaya. The study is motivated by the high intensity of online game use among urban Generation Z, which has the potential to disrupt productivity, sleep quality, and social interactions in the real world. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving eight informants selected through purposive sampling based on digital media addiction indicators. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, with Uses and Gratifications Theory and Technological Determinism Theory as the main theoretical frameworks, supported by concepts from Communication Psychology, deindividuation and the SIDE model, Online Disinhibition Effect, and the Cuelessness Model to examine the dynamics of virtual communication within gaming communities. The findings indicate that online gaming addiction is formed through the interaction of psychological factors, such as the need for emotion regulation, identity seeking, and instant gratification, and social factors, including group conformity, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), and the need for emotional bonds within virtual communities. Social factors were found to be more dominant than psychological factors among most informants, although the two factors are interconnected and cannot be separated. This study concludes that online gaming addiction among Generation Z is a digital communication phenomenon shaped by the interaction of psychological factors, social factors, and the technological characteristics of games designed to maintain player engagement.
