Abstract

The Barium Carbonate Plant from Barium Sulfate and Sodium Carbonate, with a production capacity of 25,000 tons/year, is planned to be established in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), Manyar, Gresik, East Java, in 2030. The barium carbonate plant is designed to operate continuously for 24 hours per day with 330 operating days per year and a total of 272 employees. The main raw materials used are barium sulfate (BaSO₄) and sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), which are supplied by PT Gochem Globalindo, Surabaya. The main product is barium carbonate (BaCO₃), which can be utilized in various industrial sectors, including the ceramic, glass, brick, and construction materials industries. In this plant, barium sulfate (BaSO₄) is reacted with sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) in the form of a slurry. The production process begins with the mixing of the raw materials and slurry formation, followed by feeding the slurry into the reactor. After the reaction takes place, the resulting slurry undergoes rapid cooling in a quench tower to approximately 40°C to help maintain the barium carbonate product and reduce the tendency of the reverse reaction. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes solid-liquid separation, thickening, and drying using a rotary dryer to obtain the barium carbonate product.
