Abstract
Domestic wastewater contains various pollutants, including Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and surfactants originating from detergent use. One alternative for treating domestic wastewater is the oxidation ditch system, which utilizes microbial activity under aerobic conditions to degrade organic matter. This study aimed to analyze the effects of flow velocity and recirculation ratio on COD and surfactant removal efficiency in wastewater from the Female Dormitory of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur. The study was conducted using an oxidation ditch reactor with flow velocity variations of 0.01 m/s, 0.02 m/s, and 0.03 m/s and recirculation ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The analyzed parameters included COD and surfactant concentrations, while the effects of each operating variable on removal efficiency were analyzed using two-way ANOVA after performing the Anderson-Darling normality test. The results showed that variations in flow velocity and recirculation ratio resulted in differences in COD and surfactant removal efficiency. Increasing the flow velocity and recirculation ratio under certain operating conditions can improve contact between wastewater, oxygen, and biomass, thereby enhancing the biodegradation process. However, an excessively high flow velocity may reduce the contact time between substrates and microorganisms, resulting in removal efficiency that does not continuously increase. Based on the results, the optimum operating condition was obtained from the combination of flow velocity and recirculation ratio that produced the highest COD and surfactant removal efficiencies. The oxidation ditch system demonstrated its potential as a domestic wastewater treatment method for reducing organic and surfactant pollutants. Keywords: oxidation ditch, flow velocity, recirculation ratio, COD, surfactant, domestic wastewater.
