Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is an oxidizing agent widely used in pulp and paper, textile, water treatment, chemical synthesis, and other industries. This study presents the preliminary design of a hydrogen peroxide plant with a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year using the anthraquinone autoxidation process. The production process employs 2-ethyl anthraquinone (EAQ) as the working compound dissolved in a mixture of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) and diisobutyl carbinol (DIBC). The process consists of hydrogenation and oxidation stages. Hydrogenation is carried out in a multitube reactor using Pd/Al₂O₃ catalyst at 40°C and 3 atm, with a conversion of 60%. The resulting EAQH₂ is subsequently oxidized at 40°C and 2.5 atm, producing H₂O₂ and regenerating EAQ with an oxidation efficiency of 95%. The H₂O₂ is separated from the working solution through a counter-current extraction column using water as the extracting agent, followed by vacuum distillation to obtain a product concentration of 70 wt%. The plant is designed for continuous operation over 330 days per year and is located in the Krakatau Steel Industrial Estate, Cilegon, Banten.
