Abstract

The Surabaya River plays a strategic role as the main source of raw water for the drinking water treatment plant (IPAM). Pollution in the Surabaya River is caused by various industrial and domestic activities among the contaminants polluting the river are the heavy metals copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr). This study aims to analyse the concentrations and distribution of the heavy metals Cu and Cr in the water and sediment phases, identify correlations with physicochecimal parameters and sediment grain size, determine the most dominant factors influencing the distribution of heavy metal contamination using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and assess the sediment contamination status using the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo). The test results showed that Cu concentrations in the water ranged from 0,011 to 0,119 mg/L and Cr concentrations from 0,040 to 0,096 mg/L, with the majority of samples exceeding the class I water quality standard under Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. In the sediment phase, Cu concentrations ranged from 37,6 to 54,3 mg/kg, while Cr concentrations ranged from 42,9 to 61,1 mg/kg. Statistical analysis using correlation and PCA indicated a relationship between water parameters and heavy metal accumulation. Meanwhile, the Igeo analysis results indicated an uncontaminated class (Igeo ≤ 0) for Cu and Cr at all stations however, based on the established water quality standards, nearly all stations exceeded the set limits.
