Abstract

Optimal waste incineration technology has emerged as a solution to the crisis of waste accumulation and the escalation of hazardous carbon emissions in the atmosphere. This experimental study aims to analyze the effects of air flow velocity variations at (2.2 m/s), (2.8 m/s), and (3.7 m/s), as well as variations in biodiesel fuel types (B40 and B100), on the performance of a 5 kg capacity incinerator. The evaluated parameters include combustion chamber temperature distribution, specific fuel consumption (SFC), air-fuel ratio (AFR), thermal efficiency, combustion ash yield, and exhaust gas emissions (CO, CO₂, HC, and O₂). The results demonstrated that increasing the air velocity from 2.2 m/s to 3.7 m/s increased the temperature distribution, AFR, thermal efficiency, and emissions of CO, CO₂, and HC, while simultaneously increasing the SFC. The utilization of B40 fuel consistently yielded higher performance compared to B100, achieving a maximum temperature of 644.43°C at point T2 and a peak thermal efficiency of 25.8% at an air velocity of 3.7 m/s, whereas B100 only reached a temperature of 622.33°C and a thermal efficiency of 21.5%. A Two-Way ANOVA statistical analysis proved that air velocity and fuel type partially exerted a highly significant effect on the performance and emissions of the incinerator. In conclusion, this study suggests that applying the appropriate air velocity can deliver optimal performance, and the use of B40 fuel is proven to possess comprehensive advantages in overall incinerator performance and cleaner exhaust emissions when compared to B100.
