Abstract

The preliminary design of an ammonia plant using methane as the raw material and the Haber Bosch process aims to meet domestic ammonia demand and reduce dependence on imported products. The plant is planned to operate in 2030 in Muara Wahau District, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan, with a production capacity of 75,000 tons/year and an operating period of 330 days/year. The production process consists of a primary reformer, secondary reformer, shift converter, CO₂ removal, methanator, and Haber-Bosch reactor, followed by cooling and storage of liquid ammonia. The main product is 25% concentration liquid ammonia. Based on the economic analysis, the plant has a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 1 month, Return on Investment (ROI) before tax of 31.73%, ROI after tax of 23.80%, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18.18%, and Break-Even Point (BEP) of 35.11%. These results indicate that the proposed ammonia plant is economically feasible to be established.
