Abstract
The batik industry is a sector that makes a significant contribution to the national economy; however, its production process generates liquid waste that has the potential to pollute the environment. This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of combining an ozonation process with glass marbles as packing material and HCl-activated zeolite adsorbent in reducing the levels of pollutants in batik waste. The research method employed a batch system with variations in packing height of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 cm; an adsorbent mass of 400 g; and a contact time of 20–40 minutes. Natural zeolite with a 60-mesh size was activated using a 2M HCl solution and dried to enhance its adsorption capacity. The ozonation process generates hydroxyl radicals (·OH) capable of breaking down complex organic compounds, whilst the activated zeolite adsorbs the remaining pollutants. Zeolite activation increased the specific surface area from 213.470 m²/g to 237.722 m²/g. SEM-EDX results indicated that HCl was effective in reducing impurities, increasing the relative purityof the aluminosilicate, and improving the surface characteristics of the zeolite, consistent with the morphological changes observed in the SEM. FTIR analysis revealed shifts in absorption bands at 3400–3600 cm⁻¹, 1650 cm⁻¹, and 1000–1100 cm⁻¹, which indicate interactions between –OH, C=O, and Si–O–Si groups with organic compounds in the waste. Zeolite with a packing system exhibited a more significant reduction in transmittance compared to that without packing. Optimum results were obtained with a packing bed depth of 25 cm and a contact time of 40 minutes, achieving a reduction efficiency of 93.39% for TDS, 99.98% for TSS, and 98% for colour. Calculations showed that the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model had an optimum R² value of 0.9998. The combination of ozonation and activated zeolite enhanced degradation efficiency through an extended contact time and more effective mass transfer.
