Abstract

Corn cobs are lignocellulosic waste that contains cellulose, making them a potential raw material for the production of reducing sugars. This study aimed to determine the effect of the type of acidic solvent on the reducing sugar content resulting from the hydrolysis of corn cobs and to identify the concentration of acidic solvent that yields the highest reducing sugar content. The study was conducted through the stages of raw material preparation, delignification, and hydrolysis. Preparation involved drying at 105°C for 1 hour, size reduction, and sieving through a 40-mesh screen. Delignification was performed using 10% NaOH at 50°C for 4 hours with a liquid-to solid ratio (SLR) of 1:15. Subsequently, hydrolysis was performed using acetic acid (CH₃COOH), oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄), phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄), citric acid (C₆H₈O₇), and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) at concentrations of 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40%, respectively, at a temperature of 110°C for 100 minutes at a stirring speed of 150 rpm. Reducing sugar analysis was performed using the Benedict, Luff-Schoorl, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry (Nelson-Somogyi method).
