Abstract
Cassava peel waste contains cellulose that can potentially be utilized to produce economically valuable products, such as bioethanol for renewable fuel. This study aimed to increase cellulose content through delignification—the degradation of lignin—in cassava peels using sonication, with variations in sonication power (0, 30, and 60 watts) and delignification time (30, 50, and 70 minutes). The content of cellulose liberated from lignin was analyzed using the Chesson-Datta method. The results showed that the highest lignin content (24.954%) was obtained at a sonication power of 60 watts and a delignification time of 30 minutes, whereas the highest cellulose content (75.180%) was achieved at 60 watts and 70 minutes. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of specific lignin functional groups (COOH, CH2, and CH3), indicating that significant amounts of lignin remained at those sonication settings. Morphological analysis via SEM confirmed changes in the cassava peel surface morphology resulting from the application of sonication. Overall, the optimum conditions were identified as 60 watts of sonication power and a delignification time of 70 minutes. High cellulose content offers the potential for high reducing sugar yields and enhanced bioethanol fermentation.
