Abstract

The scarcity of clean water and the increasing level of water pollution resulting from domestic and industrial activities have driven the development of effective, economical, and environmentally friendly adsorbent materials. Eggshell waste is abundant and contains approximately 94–95% calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), making it a potential calcium source for the synthesis of inorganic materials. This study aimed to synthesize calcium peroxide (CaO₂) from eggshell waste, investigate the effects of eggshell type and drying temperature on the characteristics of CaO₂, and evaluate its effectiveness as an adsorbent for acetic acid. The synthesis was carried out through eggshell preparation and calcination at 900°C to produce CaO, followed by hydration to form Ca(OH)₂ and precipitation using H₂O₂ to produce CaO₂. The eggshell types used in this study were broiler chicken, native chicken, quail, and duck eggshells, while the CaO₂ drying temperatures were varied at 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100°C. Material characterization was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and a Surface Area Analyzer (SAA), while adsorption performance was evaluated based on adsorption capacity and the percentage removal of acetic acid. The results showed that the synthesis successfully produced crystalline CaO₂ with crystallite sizes ranging from 15 to 28 nm, although a small amount of CaCO₃ residue remained due to recarbonation. The type of eggshell affected the characteristics of the synthesized material, with the highest surface area obtained for CaO₂ derived from native chicken eggshells, reaching 19.667 m²/g. The best adsorption performance was obtained at a drying temperature of 80°C using native chicken eggshells, with an adsorption capacity of 347.54 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 34.75%. These results demonstrate that eggshell waste has the potential to be utilized as a sustainable raw material for the synthesis of CaO₂, which can be applied as an adsorbent material. Keywords: eggshell waste, calcium peroxide, CaO₂, adsorbent, acetic acid, adsorption.
