Abstract

Rice husk waste generated from rice milling processes in Indonesia contains a high silica content, making it a promising raw material for adsorbent production. Utilizing this waste can reduce environmental pollution while supporting the implementation of environmentally friendly technologies, particularly in the purification of used cooking oil, thereby providing both environmental and industrial benefits. This study aimed to synthesize Bleaching Earth (BE) from rice husk using the precipitation method and evaluate its application as an adsorbent for color removal from used cooking oil. Rice husk ash was dissolved in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to produce sodium silicate, which was subsequently precipitated using sodium aluminate (NaAlO₂) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form silica gel. The experimental variables were NaAlO₂ volume, ranging from 15 to 35 mL, and stirring time, ranging from 10 to 50 minutes. The resulting Bleaching Earth was characterized in terms of moisture content, pH, chemical composition (XRF), surface area, and pore size (BET). The results showed that the best-performing Bleaching Earth samples met the requirements of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 136336-2000), with moisture contents ranging from 2.48 to 6.01%, a neutral pH, and a mesoporous structure with pore diameters of 6.49–13.87 nm. The highest adsorption performance was obtained for the sample with a pore size of approximately 11–12 nm, particularly at 35 mL NaAlO₂ and a stirring time of 40 minutes. The application of Bleaching Earth effectively reduced the color intensity of used cooking oil, resulting in clearer oil and demonstrating the potential of rice husk waste as an economical and environmentally friendly raw material for Bleaching Earth production.
