Abstract

Young bamboo leaf ash is a biomass waste with the potential to be a natural silica source due to its high SiO₂ content. This study aims to determine the effect of the type and concentration of alkaline solvents on the percentage of silica yield, as well as to determine the optimum conditions for silica extraction from young bamboo leaf ash. The solvents used were NaOH, KOH, Na₂CO₃, Ca(OH)₂, and NH₄OH, with concentration variations of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 N. The extraction process was carried out at 85°C for 3 hours with a stirring speed of 200 rpm, followed by a hydrothermal process at 120°C for 6 hours. The obtained products were characterized using XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDX. The results showed that young bamboo leaf ash contained 68.6% SiO₂. The type and concentration of the solvent affected the resulting silica yield. The NaOH solvent provided the best results, achieving the highest yield of 94.40% at a concentration of 1.5 N, followed by KOH and Na₂CO₃, whereas Ca(OH)₂ and NH₄OH did not produce any silica. XRF characterization revealed a product SiO₂ content of 62.059%, while the XRD results indicated an amorphous silica structure. Furthermore, SEM-EDX analysis displayed an irregular particle morphology with agglomeration. Based on these results, NaOH at a concentration of 1.5 N is the optimum condition for silica extraction from young bamboo leaf ash.
