Abstract

This study develops the educational game “Insiden Hotel Yamato” as a learning medium for the history of the tearing of the Dutch flag at Hotel Yamato, Surabaya. The development is a continuation of previous research that obtained a GUESS-18 score of 3.80 out of 5.00, but still had limitations in narrative depth, interaction variety, and the integration between game elements and the delivery of historical material. The game was developed using Unity 2022 with an Interactive Digital Narrative (IDN) approach, allowing players to interact with the storyline through available choices. The added development features include an inventory, a flag-raising minigame, impactful side quests, a branching story, an index book, and refinement of the interaction and dialogue mechanics. Testing was conducted on 25 respondents through a pre-test, post-test, and a GUESS-18 questionnaire adapted to the research needs. The results show an increase in respondents’ understanding from 44% in the pre-test to 91% in the post-test, an improvement of 47%. The user experience evaluation shows an average GUESS-18 score of 4.15 out of 5.00, higher than the previous score of 3.80. Based on these results, the developed educational game is able to improve the playing experience and support the understanding of the Hotel Yamato Incident more interactively.
