Abstract
Liquid waste produced from the wheat flour processing industry has a high starch content, making it potentially useful as a raw material for bioethanol production. In this study, bioethanol production was carried out through a five-day anaerobic fermentation process using Turbo Yeast to process liquid wheat flour waste into bioethanol. This study aimed to determine the most appropriate mathematical model for the bioethanol production process by considering the influence of variations in the volume of filtrate resulting from the hydrolysis of liquid wheat flour waste and the ratio of the ingredients used. The filtrate volume variations used in this study included 50 mL, 100 mL, 150 mL, 200 mL, and 250 mL, while the ratio of Turbo Yeast to the volume of hydrolysis filtrate varied at 1:20, 1:40, 1:60, 1:80, and 1:100. The success of the fermentation process was evaluated based on the bioethanol content produced in each variation. The results showed that the highest bioethanol content, 41%, was achieved with a filtrate volume of 200 mL with a Turbo Yeast to filtrate ratio of 1:20. The test results also showed that increasing the amount of Turbo Yeast tended to produce a higher bioethanol content, while increasing the volume of hydrolysis filtrate actually resulted in a decrease in bioethanol content. A mathematical model was determined based on the highest bioethanol content data using linear and nonlinear regression analysis. The modeling results showed a fairly good coefficient of determination (R²), ranging from 0.8308 to 0.912. The best mathematical model was obtained from a nonlinear cubic polynomial regression analysis with an R² value of 0.912.
