Abstract
This preliminary design study proposes the establishment of a formamide manufacturing plant utilizing methyl formate and ammonia via the non-catalytic ammonolysis process, aimed at fulfilling growing domestic demand and expanding export markets. Scheduled to operate continuously for 330 days annually starting in 2030, the plant has a planned production capacity of 55,000 tons per year and is strategically located in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), Gresik, East Java. The core synthesis takes place in a bubble column reactor at 60 C and 3 atm, achieving a formamide yield of 99.5% through an exothermic reaction. Downstream processing incorporates a pressure reduction system followed by two sequential distillation columns to achieve a primary formamide product purity of 99% alongside recoverable methanol as a valuable byproduct. With an enterprise workforce of 264 employees, the economic feasibility evaluation indicates a Fixed Capital Investment of Rp896.86 billion and a Total Capital Investment of Rp 1.43 trillion, generating annual sales revenue of Rp 2.63 trillion. Financial viability metrics demonstrate an after-tax Rate of Investment (ROI) of 21.60%, a Payback Period of 3 years and 2 months, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 17.94%, and a Break-Even Point of 31.98%, confirming the project’s technical and economic feasibility.
