Abstract
A sulfuric acid plant with a production capacity of 65,000 tons/year is designed using the Double Contact Double Absorption (DCDA) process and is planned to be located in the Wongsorejo Industrial Area, Banyuwangi, East Java. Granular sulfur is used as the main raw material, while dry air serves as the oxygen source and vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) functions as the catalyst. The DCDA process was selected because it provides a sulfur dioxide conversion of approximately 99.7%, produces high-purity sulfuric acid, and offers effective emission control. The production process consists of sulfur handling, sulfur combustion, sulfur dioxide conversion, and sulfur trioxide absorption, with heat recovery through a waste heat boiler to generate steam for plant utilities. The plant is designed for continuous operation, producing 98.5 wt% sulfuric acid over 330 operating days per year. Economic evaluation shows a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of IDR 319.41 billion and a Total Capital Investment (TCI) of IDR 418.71 billion, with a Return on Investment (ROI) of 21.18%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 16.85%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 4 years, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 37%. These results indicate that the proposed sulfuric acid plant is technically and economically feasible.
