Abstract

The issue of heritage player eligibility became a major topic in Southeast Asian football following FIFA's sanctions against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) over alleged document falsification involving seven heritage players. The controversy generated widespread public discussion, including media narratives that shaped audience perceptions. This study analyzes the narrative construction used by the hosts of The Astro Arena podcast episode “FIFA Denda FAM & 7 Pemain” in discussing the controversy. A qualitative content analysis approach based on Krippendorff's framework was employed, emphasizing inference from text to context. The units of analysis consisted of the selected podcast episode as the sampling unit, host statements as the recording units, and the surrounding discussion as the context units. The inference in my study is that the dominance of critical messages expressed by the podcast hosts reflects an underlying effort to construct the idea that transparency is essential for restoring FAM's legitimacy and public trust. This inference was not drawn from a single statement, but from recurring patterns of messages identified throughout the podcast. By examining these patterns within their broader context, concluded that transparency was consistently positioned as the primary solution to the crisis. The findings identify four narrative categories: contextualization, criticism, passive defensive, and speculative narratives. Criticism emerged as the dominant narrative, focusing not only on FIFA but also on FAM's lack of transparency and public communication regarding the heritage player naturalization process. Rather than merely assigning blame, the criticism functions as a communication strategy to encourage organizational transparency and restore public trust. Overall, the podcast constructs a narrative that positions transparency as the key to rebuilding FAM's public legitimacy during the controversy.
