Abstract

Isopropyl acetate is an ester widely used as a solvent in the paint, ink, coating, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to its high volatility, good solvency, and low toxicity. Indonesia still relies on imports to meet domestic demand, creating opportunities for local production. This preliminary plant design proposes an isopropyl acetate plant with a capacity of 60,000 tons/year, located in the Wijayakusuma Industrial Estate (KIW), Semarang, Central Java, operating 330 days/year and 24 hours/day. The process employs the esterification of isopropyl alcohol and acetic acid in a fixed-bed reactor using Amberlyst-36 Wet catalyst at 80°C and 1 atm, achieving 98% conversion. The crude product is purified through three distillation columns, including azeotropic distillation with diethylene glycol (DEG) as an entrainer, producing 7,575.7576 kg/h of isopropyl acetate. The plant requires 32,174.7766 lb/h of steam, 9,170.2427 m³/h of water, and 331.75 kWh of electricity. The economic evaluation indicates a Total Capital Investment (TCI) of Rp 2.17 trillion, annual sales of Rp 3.57 trillion, ROI of 26.80% (before tax) and 20.10% (after tax), a 4-year payback period (before tax), IRR of 14%, and BEP of 33.98%. These results indicate that the proposed isopropyl acetate plant is technically and economically feasible and has strong potential to reduce import dependency while supporting the growth of Indonesia's petrochemical industry.
