Abstract
Bleaching earth industrial waste contains sulfuric acid residues that have the potential to cause pollution if not properly processed. One alternative utilization is to react the waste with ammonium hydroxide to produce ammonium sulfate which has a use value as an inorganic fertilizer. Utilization of this waste not only reduces environmental impacts but also increases the added value of the product. This study aims to determine the reaction order and reaction rate constant, as well as to analyze the effect of temperature and reaction time on the rate of ammonium sulfate formation from bleaching earth waste containing sulfuric acid using ammonium hydroxide. The reaction was carried out with time variations of 5; 10; 15; 20; and 25 minutes and temperature variations of 30; 40; 50; 60; and 70°C. The experimental data were analyzed using zero-order, first-order, and second-order kinetic models based on the coefficient of determination (R²). The reaction rate constant (k) from the best model was then used to determine the activation energy through the Arrhenius equation approach by plotting ln k against 1/T. The results of the study showed that the reaction of ammonium sulfate formation from bleaching earth waste follows a first-order kinetic model with an R² value in the range of 0.97–0.99. The relationship between ln k and 1/T shows a linear trend with an R² value of 0.9826 and an activation energy of 10.611 kJ/mol. This value indicates that the reaction proceeds relatively quickly and is influenced by temperature according to the Arrhenius model.
