Abstract
The paint industry continues to grow alongside sustained economic development, leading to an increase in industrial production capacity. During the paint manufacturing process, various additives containing heavy metals, such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), are commonly used. Consequently, the resulting wastewater must be treated to comply with the effluent quality standards stipulated in the Indonesian Ministry of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014. This study aimed to reduce the concentrations of lead and cadmium in paint industry wastewater using the ion exchange method by investigating the effects of resin bed height, flow rate, and recycling. The independent variables included resin bed heights of 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 cm, which were packed into an ion exchange column with a diameter of 7 cm, and wastewater flow rates of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 mL/min. The treated wastewater was also recycled up to three times to enhance ion exchange performance. The optimum operating conditions were obtained at a resin bed height of 36 cm, a flow rate of 60 mL/min, and three recycling cycles. Under these conditions, the final concentrations of lead and cadmium were reduced to 1.3 mg/L and 0.03 mg/L, respectively. These results demonstrate that the ion exchange process is effective in reducing heavy metal concentrations in paint industry wastewater and has the potential to meet applicable wastewater discharge standards.
