Abstract

Molasses, a sugar industry by-product rich in fermentable sugars, has potential as a substrate for biobutanol production. This study investigated the effects of molasses concentration and *Clostridium acetobutylicum* inoculum size on butanol production and identified the optimum fermentation conditions. Molasses concentrations of 3–7% and bacterial inoculum levels of 0.26–1.32 × 10⁹ CFU were evaluated. The pretreated molasses was fermented anaerobically at 37 °C for 4 days with CaCO₃ as a pH buffer. The highest butanol yield was obtained at 6% molasses and 1.32 × 10⁹ CFU, reaching 6.06% by UV–Vis analysis and 3.80% by GC–MS. These results demonstrate that both substrate concentration and inoculum size significantly influence butanol production, confirming the potential of molasses as a feedstock for biobutanol production through anaerobic fermentation.
