Abstract
Stunting is still a serious health problem in Indonesia that has an impact on the growth, development, and quality of human resources in the future. Trenggalek Regency has succeeded in reducing the stunting rate in recent years, one of which is through the implementation of direct counseling as a development communication strategy in Ngulungkulon Village. This study aims to find out and describe the use of direct counseling as a development communication medium in stunting prevention education, as well as understand the process of delivering information in building understanding and changing the behavior of the people of Ngulungkulon Village. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and participant observations of eight informants selected through purposive sampling, consisting of health workers as the main informants and cadres and the community as supporting informants. The results of the study show that development communication in stunting education has shifted from a one-way pattern to participatory communication, with strategies prepared through target mapping, local language adjustments, and the involvement of health cadres. Direct counseling is applied through various complementary methods, namely group counseling at Posyandu, Emo Demo method, one-on-one counseling, and supporting media such as leaflets and pamphlets. The implementation of this strategy has an impact on increasing community participation and behavioral change in stunting prevention. This study concludes that direct counseling is still an effective development communication strategy in stunting education in Ngulungkulon Village because it is able to build closeness, trust, and understanding of the community in a sustainable manner.
