Abstract

Plastic waste is one of the major environmental problems due to its resistance to natural degradation processes. One alternative approach to reducing plastic waste accumulation is biodegradation using Tenebrio molitor larvae. This study aimed to determine the effect of plastic type on the biodegradation capability of Tenebrio molitor larvae, identify the characteristics of the resulting microplastics, analyze changes in chemical characteristics based on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and evaluate the quality of the frass produced. The experiment was conducted for 20 days using medical masks, LDPE plastic bags, and styrofoam as substrates, with two replications for each treatment. The observed parameters included temperature, pH, larval mass, plastic weight loss, microplastic characteristics, FTIR analysis, and frass quality based on SNI 197030-2004. Biodegradation percentage data were analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA. The results showed that styrofoam exhibited the highest biodegradation percentage, ranging from 50–60%, followed by medical masks at 32% and LDPE plastic bags at 22–26%. The Two-Way ANOVA results indicated that both plastic type and biodegradation time had a significant effect on the percentage of plastic degradation (p < 0.05), while their interaction had no significant effect (p > 0.05). Microplastics detected in both the frass and larval bodies were classified as fibers, fragments, and films. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of functional groups indicating the occurrence of biodegradation processes. Furthermore, the quality of the produced frass showed that several parameters met the requirements of SNI 197030-2004.
