Abstract
Styrofoam is a plastic waste material that is difficult to degrade naturally and has the potential to cause environmental pollution. This study was conducted to determine the effect of nutrient supplementation on the ability of Tenebrio molitor larvae to degrade styrofoam, identify the most effective nutrient, analyze changes in functional groups resulting from biodegradation using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and evaluate the potential of frass as compost. The experiment was carried out for 20 days using amino acids, probiotics, soybean lecithin, and no nutrient addition as treatments. Data analysis included the measurement of styrofoam degradation percentage, identification of functional groups using FTIR, frass quality testing, and Two-Way ANOVA. The results showed that amino acid supplementation resulted in the highest degradation rate of 60%, while the treatment without nutrient addition produced the lowest degradation rate of 26%. The ANOVA results indicated that nutrient type and biodegradation time had a significant effect on the percentage of styrofoam degradation (p<0.05). FTIR analysis revealed changes in functional groups, indicating alterations in the chemical structure of polystyrene during the biodegradation process. Frass quality analysis showed that phosphorus, potassium, and moisture content met the requirements of SNI 19-7030-2004. Based on the findings, amino acids were the most effective nutrient for enhancing styrofoam biodegradation by Tenebrio molitor larvae.
