Abstract

Modern shopping centers no longer serve solely as retail facilities but have evolved into social and recreational spaces where urban communities can interact and gather. As one of Indonesia's metropolitan cities, Surabaya has significant potential for developing an open shopping center concept that is responsive to the tropical climate. However, most existing shopping centers in the city are still designed as enclosed malls, resulting in a greater dependence on artificial energy consumption. This design adopts a Bioclimatic Architecture approach, which responds to local climatic conditions to create comfortable spaces while minimizing reliance on artificial energy. The proposed design strategies include the use of natural ventilation, daylighting, and appropriate building orientation to optimize airflow and thermal comfort. In addition, open spaces are integrated with indoor areas to strengthen the connection between interior and exterior environments, encourage social interaction, and enhance user comfort. As a result, the proposed shopping center is expected to be functional, climate-responsive, energy-efficient, and capable of supporting the dynamic lifestyle of Surabaya's urban community.
