Abstract
Community empowerment is one of the efforts undertaken to enhance the community’s capacity to develop local potential in order to strengthen the regional economy. Kampung Jajan Berbek in Sidoarjo Regency is a hub for traditional snack MSMEs that plays a role in creating jobs and serving as a source of income for the community. This study aims to analyze community empowerment as an effort to strengthen the local economy among the MSMEs in Kampung Jajan Berbek based on the theory of empowerment objectives according to Mardikanto and Soebiato (2019), namely improvements in better education, better accessibility, better action, better institutions, better business, better income, better environment, better living, and better community. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and conclusions. The results indicate that community empowerment in Kampung Jajan Berbek has contributed to strengthening the local economy through job creation, increased recognition of MSME products, institutional strengthening through community associations, and the growth of community economic self-reliance. Indicators of improvement in institutional capacity, income, the environment, quality of life, and community well-being showed fairly positive results. However, regarding indicators of improvement in education, accessibility, action, and business, various challenges were still identified, such as training programs that lack sustainability, limited access to capital and business facilities, and a lack of product innovation.
