Abstract
The growth of the GMIST congregation in Surabaya has created the need for a more representative worship facility that can accommodate a larger congregation while reflecting the cultural and spiritual identity of the Sangihe Talaud community. The limitations of the existing church building have prompted the need for a new church design that functions not only as a place of worship but also as a center for ministry, categorical development, and congregational interaction. Therefore, the design of the GMIST Church in Surabaya adopts a semiotic approach to create a building that architecturally expresses the meaning of faith, community values, and the identity of the church. The primary objective of this design is to develop a monumental, modern, and meaningful church concept with an efficient spatial organization and an architectural form that embodies spiritual symbolism. The design process employs the Intangible Metaphor approach as its primary method, translating theological values and the congregation's philosophy of life ("Somahe Kai Kehage") into spatial narratives, building orientation, and structural expression. The analysis indicates that the selected site offers good accessibility and allows spatial orientation to respond effectively to the characteristics of the tropical climate. The church mass is conceived as a symbolic architectural form, featuring a symmetrical composition and a large hip roof that creates the image of a cross when viewed from above. The three-story spatial organization is designed to accommodate worship services and categorical ministry activities, with the main sanctuary serving as the central focal point. The structural concept utilizes reinforced concrete combined with a long-span roof system, complemented by acoustic, lighting, and mechanical-electrical designs that enhance worship comfort. The proposed design results in a church concept that is functional, meaningful, and strongly represents the identity of GMIST. Keywords: Protestant Church, GMIST, Surabaya, Semiotics
