Abstract
Cadmium (Cd²⁺) contamination in aquatic environments is a major environmental concern due to its toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulative nature. This study investigated the effects of pH and contact time on Cd²⁺ removal, validated the adsorption process through mass balance and bioadsorbent characterization, analyzed adsorption kinetics, and evaluated the regeneration performance of activated okara bioadsorbent. The bioadsorbent was prepared from okara waste activated with 3 M H₃PO₄ and applied in a batch adsorption system at pH values of 5, 6, and 8 with contact times of 10, 20, 40, and 80 min. Cd²⁺ concentration was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), while the bioadsorbent was characterized by FTIR and SEM-EDX. The optimum condition was achieved at pH 6 and 20 min, resulting in a removal efficiency of 85.71% and a final Cd²⁺ concentration of 7.28 mg/L. SEM-EDX confirmed Cd accumulation on the bioadsorbent surface, while FTIR indicated the involvement of hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxylate, and ester functional groups in the adsorption process. The adsorption followed the Pseudo-Second-Order kinetic model (R² = 0.9866–0.9884), indicating a predominantly chemisorption mechanism. The bioadsorbent remained reusable for up to five adsorption–desorption cycles despite a gradual decline in desorption efficiency. These findings demonstrate that activated okara is a promising, environmentally friendly bioadsorbent for Cd²⁺ removal from artificial wastewater.
