Abstract

Reliance on rice farming creates economic vulnerability for farm households due to climatic uncertainty. Income diversification serves as an adaptation strategy to spread risk and maintain family financial stability. This study aims to identify the types and proportions of income sources, analyze the level of income diversification, and examine the factors influencing diversification among rice-farming households in Kalipecabean Village, Sidoarjo Regency. Using a quantitative approach, 36 rice-farming households with supplementary income were analyzed using the Normalized Entropy Index and Tobit regression. The results show that the non-agricultural sector is the largest income contributor for the majority of respondents (58.33%), surpassing rice farming (33.33%) and non-rice agricultural activities (8.33%). The level of diversification is generally low, indicating a shift in economic reliance toward non-agricultural sectors. Tobit regression analysis reveals that the number of income sources has a significant positive effect on diversification. Conversely, household size and land area exert significant negative effects, suggesting that heavy family burdens and limited land availability are the primary drivers for seeking additional income. Keywords: income diversification, entropy index, rice farmers, tobit regression, households.
