Abstract
Financial literacy plays a crucial role in helping individuals manage their financial resources effectively and in fostering financial independence. For Papuan students living away from home who are scholarship recipients at the Nusantara Student Dormitory (AMN) in Surabaya, the ability to manage scholarship funds is essential for meeting their needs while living away from home. This study aims to describe financial literacy and financial independence, as well as to analyze the role of financial literacy in building financial independence among Papuan students living away from home at AMN in Surabaya. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, involving eleven informants consisting of ten Papuan students and one AMN administrator. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that the majority of students possess financial literacy, as evidenced by their ability to distinguish between needs and wants, set spending priorities, keep financial records, and develop savings habits. However, some students were still found to struggle with controlling their spending, influenced by consumerist behavior, social pressure, and the phenomenon of fear of missing out (FOMO). The students’ financial independence was reflected in their ability to manage scholarship funds, meet daily needs, and make financial decisions independently. Thus, financial literacy plays a crucial role in shaping more responsible financial management behaviors and supports the achievement of financial independence among Papuan students studying away from home at AMN Surabaya. Keywords: financial literacy, financial independence, Papuan students studying away from home, scholarship recipients
